Creative Scrapbooking Supplies

Expert AuthorThe usual approach to Scrapbooking Supplies is to visit a Scrapbooking Supplies store in your town, or to search the Internet for Scrapbooking Supplies. Creative individuals, however, sometimes look for more artistic sources - or at least more unusual sources - for Scrapbooking Supplies.

Some of the unusual Scrapbooking Supplies of which we’ve read or heard are listed below. One warning must be made, however. If you are unsure whether your creative Scrapbooking Supplies are acid-free, be sure you use only copies of original photos rather than risk damage to your originals.

Scrapbooking Supplies for Creative People

You can mix any or all of the following Scrapbooking Supplies with those you would normally purchase from a specialty scrapbooking source.

1. Stickers: Stickers have been popular for many years, and are commonly available with other Scrapbooking Supplies. But you may not find what you want. Look at the stickers in school supply stores. Teachers have access to many wonderful stickers that work well as Scrapbooking Supplies.

2. Newspapers: Yes, you can use newspapers as Scrapbooking Supplies, although you may not want to use them as backgrounds (not acid-free). Instead, purchase a newspaper on the birthday, anniversary, etc. of the person(s) being commemorated in the scrapbook. Clip and paste humorous articles; sale prices; and other items of interest. They will blend beautifully with other Scrapbooking Supplies to create interest.

3. Plastic Wrap: Just as it protects leftovers in the refrigerator, plastic wrap can protect other Scrapbooking Supplies. Gently wrap colorful autumn leaves in it, and then glue the wrap to your page. Achieve an artistic effect by crumpling plastic wrap to create “wrinkles” and then spreading it over a finished page. Fix in place.

4. Construction Paper: Found among original Scrapbooking Supplies, construction paper is still a useful element. Acid free construction paper is available - be sure you use it. Cut out small decorative objects for your scrapbooking pages: white snowflakes, yellow and pink flowers, a green or purple fantasy creature. Paste them atop your other Scrapbooking Supplies for depth and artistry.

5. Cloth, Ribbon, and Lace: Most stores that offer Scrapbooking Supplies have a selection of ribbon and lace, but they will not have what you have. You may have a bit of lace from baby’s christening gown. That would be lovely on a scrapbooking page. You may have the ribbon from a corsage, or a piece of baby’s “blankie” that would make a picture even more memorable. Look around, and see what Scrapbooking Supplies are hidden among old clothing and linens.

6. Embellishments: Corsages and flower arrangements often contain potential Scrapbooking Supplies. So do gift baskets and boxes of candy. A butterfly on a wire may have been inserted in a flower arrangement. Carefully cut the wire, leaving only a small bit. Flatten the butterfly, and use it on a scrapbooking page. A box of candy may have a small golden heart tied to its ribbon - or a teddy bear. Things like these make wonderful Scrapbooking Supplies.

Creative Scrapbooking Supplies are all around you. Take a tour of your home, and see what you might use. In your kitchen, use plastic wrap to create a tiny packet of sugar and a second of cinnamon. Tie them with ribbon and use them on a baby girl page layout for sugar and spice. Before you dispose of that old sweater your husband loved so long, unravel enough of the yarn to make a tassel for a scrapbook page. Soon you will have a wealth of Scrapbooking Supplies without purchasing a thing.

Scrapbook Page Layouts for a Baby - Part 3

Expert AuthorScrapbook baby page layouts are popular and fun, as observed in Parts 1 and 2 of this article. Scrapbook baby page layouts can be unique. They can feature Walt Disney characters or pets with baby. They might show baby’s travel times, Christmas, or other holidays.

In Parts 1 and 2, we presented a total of 6 different scrapbook baby page layouts. In this last installment, we offer 4 more ideas for scrapbook baby page layouts. Remember, every page layout is done for 12″ x 12″ paper. If you need a smaller size, reduce the page layout while maintaining the square.

Scrapbook Baby Page Layouts

1. Bath Time: Whether you use a TummyTub, sink, or bathtub, baby’s bath time should be included in scrapbook baby page layouts. This page layout calls for a light blue background, with or without bubbles. You can also find scrapbooking paper featuring blue bathroom tile. In the center of your page layout, interlink two vertical, rectangular frames. Use white frames or blue bubble patterned frames that coordinate with the scrapbooking paper. Mount a bath time photo behind each frame. Cut two 3″ wide strips of the same background paper. Run the strips diagonally across the upper left and bottom right corners of the page layout, about 2.5″ from the corners. Run a piece of 1″ ribbon along the center of the upper left paper strip. Add a small heart to the ribbon just where it crosses the upper left of one frame. Cut two 3″ hearts from terry cloth, overlap them, and add to the top right corner of the page layout. In the bottom left of the page layout, “attach” a rubber ducky to 2 fanned tags. Let one tag overlap the corner of the bottom frame. Your journaling goes on the tags.

2. Travel Time: This page layout will help you document baby’s first trip, whether it was in a car, bus, train, plane, or boat. It may have included more than one mode of travel. Begin with background paper featuring a map. Choosing a color that complements your photos, divide the page layout in fourths by running rick-rack or ribbon of that color both vertically and horizontally through the center. Tear paper in a second color to make background matting for 4 photos. Place one in each of the four parts of the page layout, tilting some and keeping others straight. Tear windows in three of the torn papers and mount your photos beneath them. Use the top right torn paper for journaling. Complete your page layout by mounting a toy train embellishment where the rick-rack crosses in the middle. Add other toy transportation sticker at each of the bottom two corners of the page layout, overlapping the torn paper.

3. Walking Time: This scrapbook baby page layout provides space for 3 large and 2 small photos of baby learning to walk - plus journaling. It is more complex, but enchanting when complete. Choose 2 colors that complement your photos. We used light sage green background paper with sage green and orange frames. We put a 3.5″ x 4.5″ (outside dimensions) orange frame 1″ from the bottom, 1.5″ from the left of the page. We placed a twin orange frame diagonally opposite at the top of the page. We overlapped these two frames with a sage green frame of the same size. We placed it in the center of the page layout, and tilted it 25 degrees to the left. Next, we set a small green slide mount with its top the same as the upper right frame, 0.25″ from the left side of that frame. We added an orange slide mount near the left edge of the page, about 3″ from the top. Slide frames were about 2.5″ x 2.5″ (outside dimensions). Place two 10″ strips of orange, textured ribbon under the frames at the top right and bottom left, running the ribbon diagonally across the page layout corners. Trim even with edges of paper. Lay a frame of sage green lace around the large orange frames, overlapping the frames very slightly. Add a bit of journaling in the upper left corner of the page layout, and a teddy bear or two in the lower right.

4. Adoption Time: An adopted baby is very special, as the author knows from personal experience. If your adopted baby is from a different country, theme your page layout to that country. As an example, suppose your baby was born in an Asian country. Use red, oriental patterned scrapbooking paper for the background. Starting at the top left corner, run a black “movie” strip, with sprocket holes, diagonally to just above the middle of the right side of the page layout. Your movie strip should hold 4 or 5 small photos. Slightly left of center, place a cut- out of the baby’s head and upper body. Add journaling to overlap the cut-out slightly. In the lower right corner of your page, place a large oriental calligraphy character for the word “love”. Complete your page layout by placing 3 oriental embellishments overlapping the bottom left of the movie strip. Use items such as paper lanterns, bamboo parasols, or a crane.

You now have 10 free scrapbook baby page layouts to use. You also have samples to help you design your own page layouts for additional pages in the baby’s scrapbook or in other scrapbooks.

Helpful Tip

Always place every element of a page layout before gluing anything. This will give you opportunity to make adjustments where needed.
